Features
The Educational Technology program has a strong focus on instructional design, development, and evaluation, as well as current and emerging trends and technologies. These include human performance technology, training, web-based learning, distance learning, distance education, technology integration, multimedia learning, animated pedagogical agents, and interactive learning environments. The Ph.D. program has a strong research focus, with significant practical experience conducting research and publishing works. The program offers several courses online as well.

Characteristics
Educational Technology is a program area with seven faculty members in the Division of Psychology in Education. It has been ranked in the top five programs nationally since Educational Media and Technology Yearbook began ranking Educational Technology programs in the 1980s. Its reputation is based on the accomplishments of its faculty, the placement and success of its graduates, and the productivity of its students.

Faculty Contributions
Educational Technology faculty have accounted for more than $12 million in research income in the past four years. One faculty member was president of a major international organization, International Society for Technology Education, and three other faculty members served terms as editor of the major journal in the Educational Technology field. Special recognition received by Educational Technology faculty since the year 2000 include the following: Paul Pear National Technology Lifetime Achievement Award; 2001 ASU Outstanding Service Award; University of Virginia Outstanding Dissertation Award, 2001; Association for Educational Communications and Technology Division of Instructional Development Outstanding Service Award, 2002; ASU College of Extended Education 2001 Outstanding Faculty Award; ASU 2002 Outstanding Doctoral Mentor Award. Both students and faculty have received Fulbright awards.

Educational Technology Graduates
The ASU program is widely considered to rank first nationally among Educational Technology programs with respect to placement of its graduates in university programs. Major universities at which our graduates have accepted faculty positions include Air Force Academy, Carnegie-Mellon, Florida State, George Washington, Purdue University, the University of Georgia, the University of Minnesota, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Texas (Austin), Texas A & M, the University of Virginia, and the College of William and Mary.

Significant awards received by ASU Educational Technology graduates include:

  • First female appointed as an Honorary Fellow in the American College of Dentistry.
  • First endowed chair in the United States in the field of Educational Technology.
  • The Year 2000 Alfredo de los Santos Award for Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education, presented by the American Association of Higher Education.
  • Arizona State University's first Morrison Scholar in Public Policy.
  • The Year 2000 Florida State University Distinguished Teacher Award, awarded to one faculty member annually for a record of sustained teaching excellence.

Other significant positions held by Educational Technology graduates include:

  • Provost at Central Connecticut State University
  • Vice President for Quality Management at American Express
  • Vice President for Human Resources at Bank One
  • Associate Director of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Director of the Morrison Institute

Numerous graduates hold positions at major companies, including CISCO Systems, Intel, Motorola, and American Express. Graduates also serve the Maricopa Community College District, local universities and Arizona school districts as instructional designers and instructional technologists.

Sculpture and Payne HallEducational Technology graduate students at ASU rank among the most productive in our field. Since 1999, ASU Educational Technology students have authored or co-authored a total or more than 100 articles in refereed national journals and papers presented at refereed national or international conferences. ASU ranks among the top three among all universities in papers presented at the national conference of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Four ASU graduates in the past nine years have won the Robert M. Gagne Award, presented annually by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology for the outstanding dissertation in our field.
